A few words about Ierapetra

Situated on a strategic corner of Europe, the city of Ierapetra played an important role in the history and struggles of Crete. It is at the lowest point of South Europe with a distance of 368 klm from the african coast. Ierapetra is built in the place of ancient Ierapytna, the most important trading harbour in the Roman period, due to its proximity to Egypt. Nowadays, Ierapetra is among the most productive cities of Greece and one of the most significant sources of olive-oil and fresh vegetables in Europe. It is the hottest city in Greece with average annual temperature at 20.1 ^oC.

Some of the main sights of the city are the Fortress “Kales” built in 1212, Napoleon’s house, the archaeological museum and the old Mosque
